The Fleet Mechanic Apprentice will learn to perform skilled work in the general and major repair of cars, trucks and other City equipment. Apprentice positions are for one year and will be authorized to work up to 29 hours per week. Essential Job Duties The following duties are normal for this position. Learn to perform mechanical and service work on all City vehicles, trucks and other equipment such as: front ends; four-wheel brake job; tire replacement/repair; electrical repair; tune-ups; FI repairs; drive train repairs; diesel repair/minor/service. Pick up and deliver vehicles to various vendors. Repair parts on vehicles and equipment. Attend all required training sessions. Fosters positive employee relations and employee morale on a City-wide basis. Minimum Qualifications HS Diploma or equivalent or some technical vocational education/training. At least 18 years of age.. Must be enrolled in a vocational program or be a recent graduate of such. Must possess a valid Florida Drivers License with a good driving record. Knowledge of construction, assembly, adjustment and maintenance of a wide variety of automotive, truck and equipment. Knowledge of all types of shopping tools. Ability to follow directions and have a mechanical aptitude. Ability to learn repairing diesel motors and pumps; diagnosing defects of worn or broken parts on engines; to perform tune-ups, electrical, brake, air conditioning, cooling system, exhaust system repairs; front end and clutch repairs; pumps and related equipment maintenance. Skill in applying methods and techniques in the use of automotive or diesel repairs.
